Sigma DP-1 Review @ Walnut Creek

Sigma DP-1 is a compact camera, which has a fixed wide-angle lense (28mm-equivalent F/4 lens).
I borrowed this camera from my coworker, Richard while I was on business trip with him to San Francisco (May 5 ~ 7).
He let me use the camera hoping that I would teach him how to use it, but I never did ;-)

My first impression of this camera is.. very slow in operation.
It lacks many features that many other competitors support (e.g., macro shooting, image stablization, speedy AF, etc.)
However, when I reviewed photos after converting RAW format to JPG, I was very surprised at its quality.
This little compact with an unusually big sensor takes really sweet photos.

카메라를 처음 만져본 느낌은 동작이 "매우 느리다"였습니다.
대부분 요즘 카메라들이 가지고 있는 접사, 손떨림보정 등의 기본적인 기능도 없고 자동촛점은 매우 느렸습니다.
하지만 RAW에서 JPG으로 변환한 사진들을 보고나니, 화질 하나는 모든 단점들을 불식시킬만큼 좋았습니다.
다른 똑딱이의 10배이상 큰 CMOS 사이즈는 DSLR로 찍은듯한 화질을 보여주더군요.

I was surprised at the image's sharpness and color expressions. Please do not judge them by my photos though.
Although I was not familiar with its proprietary software (called SPP), I would admit that its RAW color expression is the most amazing among other DSLR cameras.

이미지의 선예도와 색상표현력은 놀라움 그 자체였습니다. 하지만 제 사진 가지고 판단하지 마시길..ㅋㅋ
SPP라는 번들소프트웨어를 처음 사용해보지만, RAW 패러미터로 보정한 색상표현력은 DSLR 카메라들과도 안 뒤질 만큼 뛰어났습니다.

It's me in the picture!
I love wide-angle. That's why I would prefer DP-1 (28mm) to its successor model, DP-2 (41mm).

저는 시원한 광각을 좋아합니다. 그래서 제게는 후속모델인 DP-2보다 DP-1화각이 더 매력있더군요.

A good thing about compact camera is you wouldn't need to carry a heavy tripod as you do with DSLR camera.
I took myself in the picture by just placing the camera on a paper cup.

컴팩트 카메라의 장점은 무거운 삼각대를 안가지고 다녀도 된다는 점입니다.
이 사진은 카메라를 일회용 컵위에 놓고 찍었습니다.

Black & White images still show rich details of their highlight and shadow areas.
It looks like DP-1 can beat my Canon 5D in BW images.

흑백 사진은 명부/암부의 디테일이 풍부하게 살아있습니다. 마치 라이카의 느낌이 나는듯한..

Night landscape shooting.
I see some flares with closer lights, but can't complain as a compact camera.

야경모드는 빛갈라짐이 예쁩니다.
다만 멀리 있는 불빛은 괜찮은데 가까이 있는 강렬한 불빛은 플레어 현상같은 색상이 번지더군요.

With a compact camera, it is much easier to get closer to a subject and capture a natural snapshot.
컴팩트 카메라로는 피사체에 쉽게 다가설 수 있고 자연스러운 사진들을 건지기 쉽습니다.
